The answer depends on the size of the hail, the age and condition of the shingles, and the type of marks left behind. Not every dent is a problem, and not every roof that looks fine from the driveway is fine up close.

They have a fiberglass mat for strength, asphalt for waterproofing, and ceramic granules on top to block ultraviolet light and add impact resistance. When hail hits, it can knock granules loose, crack the mat, or bruise the asphalt layer underneath. Understanding the difference between cosmetic and functional damage is the first step toward deciding what to do after a storm.
When a hailstone hits a shingle, it is not a gentle tap. A stone falling from a thunderstorm can strike at speeds that vary with size and wind. The impact compresses the shingle against the roof deck. On the surface, granules get knocked off. Below the surface, the asphalt layer can crack or separate from the fiberglass mat. This subsurface damage is called a bruise, and it is the part that matters most for the long term health of the roof.
The direction of the strike matters too. Hail driven by wind hits one slope harder than the others. South and west facing slopes in Central Texas often take the worst of it. The ridge cap, vents, and flashing can show impact marks that help confirm the direction and severity of the storm. Soft metals like aluminum roof vents and gutter screens are good indicators. If they are dented, the shingles nearby probably took a beating as well.
Granule loss alone is not always a reason to replace a roof. Shingles shed some granules over time just from rain and sun. But hail strips granules in a concentrated pattern, often leaving a dark spot where the asphalt is exposed. If you can see the asphalt layer in multiple spots across the roof, the shingles are losing their protection against UV light. That speeds up aging and can lead to cracks and leaks sooner than the shingle's rated life.

Press on it with your thumb and it will feel different from the surrounding area, softer, sometimes with a slight give. The bruise is not just cosmetic. The asphalt is the waterproofing layer. When it cracks, water can reach the fiberglass mat and eventually the roof deck.
Bruises are easier to find on a cool morning when the shingles are stiff. Heat makes asphalt pliable, and a bruise can temporarily close up in the afternoon sun. A good inspection looks at the roof when the temperature is moderate. The inspector runs a hand over the shingle surface, feeling for depressions that are not visible to the eye. This is not something you can do from a ladder at the edge of the roof. It takes walking the roof carefully and checking multiple slopes.
Over time, a bruised shingle will deteriorate faster than an undamaged one. The crack in the asphalt lets water sit against the mat. Granule loss also matters because those granules end up in the gutters. After a hail storm, check your downspout outlets and gutter bottoms. A heavy accumulation of granules is a sign that the roof took a significant hit. A light dusting is normal. Piles of granules, especially mixed with small pieces of shingle edge, mean the impact was hard enough to break the shingle surface. That is worth having a professional look at.

The line between cosmetic and functional is not always sharp, and reasonable people can disagree on a particular shingle. That is why a careful inspection matters.
The age of the roof plays into this. A roof that is ten years old with hail damage may be a candidate for replacement even if the damage is borderline, because the remaining life is already shortened. A roof that is two years old with the same level of damage might be repaired. The question is always whether the damage will cause the roof to fail before its expected life is up. Hail size is the single biggest factor in whether a roof is damaged. Pea sized hail, under half an inch, rarely hurts asphalt shingles. It might knock a few granules loose but seldom causes bruising. At an inch and a half, golf ball size, damage is common and often widespread. At two inches or larger, the roof is almost certainly damaged, and other parts of the house like siding and windows are at risk too.
The density of the hail matters as well. Hard, clear ice hits harder than soft, cloudy ice that shatters on impact. Hail that forms in a wet growth environment tends to be denser. Hail that bounces off the roof and lands intact on the ground is harder and more damaging than hail that breaks apart when it hits. You can learn a lot by looking at the hailstones on the ground after a storm. If they are solid and clear, the roof took a harder hit than if they are crumbly and white.
Wind speed during the storm changes the equation. Hail driven by a sixty mile per hour wind hits with more force than hail falling straight down. The angle of impact also affects which slopes take the worst damage. A north wind drives hail into the south slope. A west wind hammers the east slope. After a storm, walk around the house and look at all sides. The damage pattern will tell you the direction the storm came from and which slopes need the closest inspection.
Start from the ground. Look at the gutters, downspouts, and any metal flashing you can see. Dents in soft metal are a reliable sign that hail was large enough to damage shingles. Check window screens, air conditioner fins, and the mailbox. If these show dents, the roof probably does too. Look at the ridge cap with binoculars. The cap takes direct hits and often shows damage more clearly than the field of the roof.
If you are comfortable on a ladder, check the gutters for granule accumulation. Scoop out a section and look at how much grit is in the debris. A heavy layer of granules is a red flag. Look at the shingle edges along the eaves. Hail can break off the corners of shingles, leaving a jagged edge that is visible from the ladder. Also check any rubber boots on plumbing vents. Hail can crack aged rubber, and that is a leak point even if the shingles are fine.
