Your attic is an oven in summer and a moisture trap in winter. How air moves through it decides whether your shingles last or bake themselves brittle years before their time.

Most homeowners never think about the air above their ceiling until something goes wrong. By then the damage is done. In Central Texas, where attic temperatures can climb past 140 degrees on a July afternoon, ventilation is not a nice to have detail. It is the difference between a roof that goes the distance and one that cooks itself from the inside out.

A roof is a system. Shingles, underlayment, decking, and ventilation all have to work together. When the airflow is wrong, heat and moisture build up. Common Vent Types on Texas Homes

Soffit vents are the most common intake. They are cut into the underside of the eaves and can be individual rectangular grilles or a continuous perforated strip. The key is that they stay clear of insulation. Blown in insulation can easily drift over the soffit bays and block the airflow. Baffles stapled between the rafters keep that channel open.

On the exhaust side, ridge vents run along the peak of the roof and are nearly invisible from the ground. They provide an even draw across the whole attic. Can I add a ridge vent to a roof that does not have one?
