Sparx Roofing / Roofing in Austin TX
Austin homes take a beating from spring hail, summer heat, and the occasional windstorm that tears through the Hill Country. We replace roofs for one flat price with no surprises.
Austin has a particular kind of roof. Most houses around here are ranch homes with simple gable or hip lines, built with brick or hardboard siding, and topped with composition shingles that bake under the Texas sun year after year. The heat does not crack a shingle overnight. It cooks the oils out of the asphalt slowly, leaving the surface brittle and the granules loose in the gutter. By the time a hailstorm hits, the shingle has already lost much of its ability to flex and absorb impact.
We work on roofs all over Central Texas, from Killeen and Harker Heights down through Georgetown and Round Rock into Austin proper. The housing stock changes from one town to the next, but the fundamentals do not. A roof is a roof. It sheds water or it does not. Our job is to make sure yours does, and to do it at a price that makes sense without a song and dance.
We charge one price for a full roof replacement: $7 per square foot, material and labor together. That figure covers a complete job on a standard home. We use 30 year architectural shingles, which are thicker than the old three tab strips you see on older Austin houses. They hold up better to wind and they look sharper from the street. The price includes tearing off the old roof down to the deck, hauling away every scrap, laying new underlayment and flashing, installing the shingles, and a full cleanup with a magnet pass to pick up nails from the yard and driveway.
The only thing not covered in that square foot price is rotten decking. We do not know what the plywood looks like until the old shingles come off. If we find soft or delaminated decking, we show you exactly what we found, quote the replacement at a fair rate, and wait for your approval before we touch it. No surprises, no mystery charges tacked on at the end. We measure your roof ourselves before we schedule anything, so the number you get is based on real square footage, not an estimate off satellite imagery.
Spring is hail season in Central Texas. A line of supercells will roll through and drop stones across the whole area. Hail bruises shingles. It knocks granules loose and leaves dark spots of exposed asphalt that weather fast. A roof that has been through a couple of decent hailstorms may not leak yet, but it is on borrowed time. The damage is cumulative, and the next storm finishes what the last one started.
Wind is the other culprit. Austin sits at the edge of tornado alley, and straight line winds over sixty miles an hour are common in April and May. Wind gets under the shingle tabs and creases them backward, breaking the seal strip. Once that seal is broken, the shingle can flap in the next breeze and eventually tear off entirely. We see a lot of roofs with missing tabs on the windward slopes, especially on two story homes where the exposure is greater.
Then there is the heat. A dark shingle roof in August can hit surface temperatures far above the air temperature. Over years, that thermal cycling degrades the asphalt. The shingles cup, curl, and lose their granular coating. A roof that looks tired and patchy at fifteen years in this climate is not unusual. It is just what the sun does.
$7 per square foot, material and labor included, on 30 year architectural shingles. Tear off, haul away, underlayment and flashing, labor and a magnet pass on the cleanup are all in that number. Rotten decking found after tear off is quoted and approved by you before it is replaced.
We show up early. The crew arrives with a trailer loaded with shingles, underlayment rolls, coil stock for flashing, and the tear off tools. We lay tarps around the perimeter of the house to catch debris. The tear off starts with a shingle fork and a pry bar crew working from the ridge down. Old shingles, felt, and nails go straight into a dump trailer parked at the edge of the driveway.
Once the deck is bare, we inspect every sheet of plywood. If we find rot around penetrations or at the eaves, we mark it, measure it, and walk you through what needs replacing. After any deck repairs are done and approved, we roll out synthetic underlayment and install new drip edge and valley metal. The shingle crew follows right behind, nailing each course with the pattern and fastener count the job requires. Ridge cap goes on last.
Cleanup takes real time. We blow the roof clean, then walk the yard and driveway with a magnetic sweeper to pull every stray nail. We check flower beds, mulch, and the gap between the house and the fence line. When we leave, the only sign we were there is a new roof overhead.
If a storm rolls through and you suspect roof damage, we will come out and look. We walk the roof, check for hail strikes, creased shingles, and missing tabs, and we tell you plainly whether we think a claim is worth filing. If the damage is minor and less than your deductible, we will say so. We are not in the business of running up claims for cosmetic marks.
Your deductible is yours to pay. Texas law is clear on that and we do not get around it for anybody. We do not promise a claim will be approved, because that decision sits with the adjuster and the carrier. What we do is provide an honest assessment of the damage, take photos, and point out what we see. You decide how to proceed from there.
Austin has a deep stock of homes built in the postwar decades, and those houses often have roof decks made of spaced board sheathing rather than plywood. That is fine. We can lay a new roof over solid plank decking just as well as over sheet goods. The key is that the deck must be sound. If the boards are cupped or have gaps wide enough to sag the underlayment, we address it before the shingles go down.
Newer subdivisions around the city tend toward engineered truss systems with oriented strand board decking. These roofs are typically steeper and more complex, with multiple valleys and dormers. The work takes a little longer, but the process is the same. The price does not change based on roof complexity for a standard replacement. A square foot is a square foot.
We are based in Killeen and work a wide radius across Central Texas. In a given week you will find our crew in Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, Temple, Belton, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Nolanville, Salado, and Waco. We schedule jobs to keep drive time reasonable, but we do not charge a mileage fee or a city surcharge. The price is the same whether your home is in central Austin or out toward the county line.
Austin traffic is a factor we plan around. We stage materials the day before when we can, and the crew rolls out early to beat the worst of I-35. If you are in a neighborhood with tight streets or limited staging space, we figure that out during the measurement visit. We have worked in every kind of Austin subdivision, from wide lot ranch streets to compact infill lots with zero lot lines. There is always a way to get the trailer in and the tear off out.
The first step is a measurement. We come to your house, get on the roof or measure from the eaves with a wheel, and calculate the actual square footage. We do not guess from county records or satellite photos. Once we have the number, we give you a straightforward total based on the $7 per square foot rate. There is no pressure, no limited time offer, and no follow up phone calls badgering you for a decision.
If you want to talk through the details before we come out, call us at our quote form. We can answer questions about shingle color, timing, decking concerns, or how long the job will take. We schedule replacements in the order we get commitments, and we keep the calendar honest. When we give you a start date, we show up on that date.
It includes tear off of the old roof to the deck, haul away of all debris, synthetic underlayment, new flashing and drip edge, 30 year architectural shingles, all labor, and a full cleanup with a magnet pass through the yard and driveway. The only thing it does not include is rotten decking replacement, which is quoted separately if we find it.
Most homes are done in one to two days. A smaller ranch with a simple gable roof can be finished in a single long day. Larger homes or roofs with steep pitches and multiple valleys may take two full days. Weather can shift the schedule, especially during spring storm season, but we keep you posted on timing.
You do not need to be home the whole time, but we do need access to the property and a place to stage materials. We recommend someone be there at the start so we can confirm any decking issues if they come up, and at the end to walk the finished job. Otherwise, you can go about your day.
Hail damage looks like dark spots where granules have been knocked off the shingle, leaving the asphalt exposed. You may also find granules in the gutters or downspouts. The bruise is often easier to feel than to see. We walk the roof and check each slope, then give you a straight assessment of what we find.
The adjuster makes the call on the claim, not us. If the adjuster denies the claim, we can show you what we saw and you can decide whether to proceed out of pocket or get a second opinion. We do not argue with adjusters on your behalf, and we do not inflate estimates to change an outcome.
We measure, we quote, we show up. No games and no surprises. Call our quote form to set up a measurement for your Austin home and get a firm number at $7 per square foot.
